Subject: DOOM v1.1 and Gravis Gamepad...
I know this isn't GUS related, but hey, it has to do with a Gravis product.
;)
I just upgraded to DOOM v1.1 and it works fine, but now it doesn't work
with my Gravis GamePad. I can move right, and go backwards only.
Does anyone else have this problem?
I looked in the DEFAULT.CFG and I see no settings for Joystick-movement
positions (only buttons). Everytime I start DOOM up it also asks me to
configure the joystick. (Push to upper-left, lower-right, etc...)
Thanks for any suggestions...
BTW, A friend of mine just sold their GUS for $200 (256k RAM) and went and
bought another one, and upgraded it to a MEG. I don't know who bought it,
but they wanted it that bad I guess.

Subject: Fed up
Well, I'm just about fed up. I've been a GUS owner for about six months
and I must say that while I've been impressed by the technical merits of
the GUS, I'm just about ready to pitch it for a variety of minor issues
that have snowballed into a large mountain of frustration ....
1) Gravis themselves: I read in a recent digest about some poor fella
who had to wait three months to receive his 2.06a disks. Well, buddy,
I've been waiting *six* months and have seen hide nor hair of mine. And
neither has my friend, who bought hers 6 weeks earlier. And yes, we sent
in the registration cards.
Add to that the complete ignoring of several help requests mailed to
Gravis. Or for that matter, product purchase requests. Just a simple
"piss off, we're too busy" would have been nice, since I would have known
not to wait. But nothing, nada, zilch ....
2) Compatibility problems: It won't work with this, or that, or that ....
It's simple little stuff like have to initialize the Windows driver every
time Windows starts. Or that having software work seems to be dependent on
the particular hardware configuration, the type of BIOS used, and the phase
of the moon. After several weeks of trying to upgrade the RAM, I finally
determined that the GUS only likes *CERTAIN BRANDS* of RAM.
I've had 12 years of working with PCs and *NEVER* had this much ongoing trouble
with a piece of hardware. If *I* have this much trouble, I really feel for the
poor schmuck who finds a GUS under his Christmas tree. Of course, if Gravis
would answer my email ....
3) Product availability: God help those without InterNet access. They'd
never know about epas or the Digest. *Is* there a CD-ROM or 16-bit recording
daughterboard available? Where do I buy one? How to upgrade? Of course,
if Gravis would only answer my email ....
I think you see the common theme running through all this. *WAKE UP,
GRAVIS!!! YOUR CUSTOMER BASE IS GETTING PISSED OFF!!!* You're hiding in
your little shell in Canada and expecting the few of us out here in positions
to talk to tell the world to beat a path to your door. You *have* built
the better mousetrap, but a *lot* of the mice don't fit. Talk to me! I'm
sick of being ignored. As an instructor here at UNF, I've been recommending
the GUS, mainly because I thought the Internet support would outweigh the
compatibility problems. However, given the lack of response from Gravis,
I'm going to stop. The SB make have poor sound, but all too often, the
GUS has no sound at all.
As a side note, I was in the mall the other day at Babbage's. A customer
asked about the GUS and was told that they had stopped carrying it. Seems
they sold about a dozen of them and they were all returned because they
were incompatible. And don't try blaming it on ignorant users. Just who
do you think the vast majority of the market is?

The multimedia extensions have nothing to do with this point. The multimedia
extensions, in fact, require only a '286 and standard mode.
The reason the GUS driver won't run under standard mode is that it wasn't
written to run under standard mode. I imagine they probably used some '386
specific instructions.
386 Enhanced mode is far superior to standard mode. Programs that "prefer"
standard mode were generally written for Windows 3.0.
Incidentally, most PC manufacturers have started preloading all new machines
with Windows for Workgroups 3.11 (which includes 32 bit file access, among
other great features), and which *doesn't have a standard mode*.

When you use the Windows versions of the Sierra games, and properly load the
GUS with patches, it'll work fine. Sierra games are MPC compliant games, and
support all Windows sound cards.

Subject: Line-in while playing DOOM?
Hi all,
I apologize for clogging up the list with DOOM stuff, but it is
GUS-related.
I've got a portable CD player hooked up to the GUS line-in, and can use
the CD while in Windows, playing Wolf3D, etc. It seems that games which
support the GUS directly, such as DOOM or Epic Pinball, does not mix the
line-in. I've got -l on ultrinit, with no results. I do want the
sound effects, so I can't just disable the sound options. Am I
missing something? I want King Crimson blasting while I'm
chainsawing imps!

Is this true Jayeson? I'm using the first or second T7G patch (the third
locks my system up solid no matter WHAT I do.) I ran T7G with both MT-32
and SCC emulation to hear which was best. Never had one problem.

Hello folks. This is Snowman, bringing you a contest.
Yes, you guessed it. YOU HAVE TO WRITE A SONG.
Musicians from the PC, Amiga, MacIntosh, and Atari
scenes are all encouraged to enter. The prizes are modest,
but the goal of this contest is to allow computer musicians
from all across Earth to "show their stuff."
This contest has been running for about the past two
months. Unfortunately, it did not occur to me to post the
rules into this publication until now.
THE BAD NEWS: You only have until the 31st of December
to submit your song.
THE GOOD NEWS: If you have a song already done that you
havn't released, then you are home free.
I hope that you decide to enter this contest. We can
use all the entries we can get, and it is a good chance for
up and coming musicians to be spotlighted.
---------
The Rules
---------
1. The song's uncompressed length must not be more than
300,000
bytes in length
2. The musical format can be any one of the following:
MOD: can be the 4, 6, or 8 legged variety
669: must play correctly on Composer v1.3
S3M: must play correctly on S3MPLAY v0.9b
STM: must play correctly on DMP v2.71
FAR: must play correctly on Farandole v1.00
ULT: must play correctly on Ultra Tracker v1.3
MTM: must play correctly on Multitracker v1.00b
3. All entries are to be submitted before January 1st, 1994.
4. Only one entry per person
5. Songs already released are not allowed to enter
6. The archive name must use the format:
$$FILENM.<ZIP,ARJ,LHA,LZH> -- where FILENM is your song
title.
NOTE: Unfortunately, Internet does not accept files that
start with "$$", so if you upload it to an FTP
site,
just strip the "$$". When I upload your song to a
BBS, I'll put the "$$" back in.
The file name must use the format:
$$FILENM.<MOD,669,S3M,STM,FAR,ULT,MTM> -- where FILENM is
your song title.
7. The song must have your handle and/or name in it.
8. The text file SUBMIT.TXT (included in this archive) must
be completed and included in your song's archive.
9. The song's archive may include any BBS ads, group .NFOs,
FILE_ID.DIZs, or any other such thing.
------------------------
Comments and Suggestions
------------------------
A. If you don't include your home mailing address in the
SUBMIT.TXT form, I won't be able to send you your
prize :(
B. If, for some reason, I can not download, unarchive, or
play your song correctly, it is your loss. I have
been in this racket for quite some time now and know
what I am doing, so chances are that if something is
wrong, its probably not my fault
C. Upload your song to more than one location
-------
Judging
-------
There is a commitee of 5 member who will be voting on the
songs. Here they are in no particular order:
1. Daniel Potter (author of Farandole tracker)
2. Mike Phillips (sysop of Digital Oxygene BBS)
3. Daniel Goldstein (author of MultiTracker Module
Editor)
4. Snowman (author of this contest)
5. Rob Butler (sysop of the Music Connection BBS)
Results will be gathered and posted as soon as possible
after January 1st.
------
Prizes
------
The top five winners will be mailed a HD 3.5 disk with
all of the top songs on it. Unfortunately, on a college
budget, that is about the best prize I can offer.

Hello,
I just bought "Companions of Xanth" since I'm looking for an adventure game
to entertain myself with. It will work with SBOS, and does support MT-32
sounds, but whenever I run MEGAEM no sound at all will play. I tried MEGAEM's
-rirqx switch, and have run the setup program many times along with changing
my ULTRASND variable, but no luck.
Does anyone know how to get Xanth and MEGAEM working together?

GUS day people,
Can anyone confirm if Quest For Glory IV really uses the Sierra
32bits drivers? So far, only Gabriel Knight and Police Quest IV does.
Lesuire Suit Larry VI still uses the old drivers. Someone told me that he
got QG4 working fine and the game is now on my list (The G-List). I don't
think QG4 is using 32bit drivers because I get the demo running just fine
with the Sierra drivers. Anyone care to clear this up?

Hello,
You are correct: QG4 is a 32-bit program that cannot use the GUS Ultramid
driver. We are currently working with Gravis to see what can be done. For
the moment, please be aware that our 32-bit games (QG4, Gabriel Knight, and
Police Quest:Open Season) do not support GUS.
